Another four? Biden's dance card is open.
Strike up the band for "Ageism on Parade", an uncomfortable song about us all.
Ageism, also spelled agism is a term referring to pre judgement of others based on their apparent age.
Who remembers the ageism of being young? Ever meet the teacher or doctor that seems too young to be good at their jobs? For some, as a youth, proving responsible enough to earn privileges could be an uphill climb. Seems we get the keys to the car and another generation wants them back. It is the passages of life we experience.
The media and all that comment and pile onto issue after important issue will be contemplating, rehashing, beating and underlining about and around Joe Biden this week coming up. Washington Post and most who breathe have anticipated his bid for reelection. The lowest numbers in history for unemployment follow him into this moment and in an extremely challenging economy, it means a lot. In global upheaval after the former administration leaving us tattered and pilfered, the Biden administration is pulling us up and out of trouble. In masterfully orchestrated leadership, re coalescing NATO, adding countries (!) all to lend a helping hand to Ukraine in fighting off the aggressions of Russia. It’s a lot. A big bunch of HUZZAH and why his numbers are so low, beats me, but here we are.
In an age where age extension is being sought through medicine, nutrition and disease prevention, what will people do with the added years? More movies, tv, books to read and birds to watch? The alternative view would be holding a job longer, becoming a mentor maybe with more flexible hours. Book writing rather than reading and acknowledge that more time on the planet might not mean continuing to break athletic records, but that’s only important if you are an athlete to begin with.
Many truths and half truths and the ensuing falsities will be tossed into the ring to discuss. “No one is guaranteed tomorrow.” is a favorite. An accident, disease or human frailty can sideline us without warning, is another. More - that age is not a metric of ability or faculties lost. There is however an acknowledged trend as we all age.
In a climate of old white men controlling things, I shudder and squint with the idea of seeking younger or less white in effort comply with style over substance. That doesn’t compute for a job which lands at the top of our country’s government. Ability is an ill-defined quality in these matters. How able a physicist and writer was Stephen Hawkins?
Whoever is at the top, has plenty of expert help. It’s true that the country leaned on this idea for the Trump years, however, we are also aware of just how compliant DFG (disgraced former guy) was with rules, norms and the truth.
Being a leader requires qualities that are different than being an implementer. Leadership skills are many and a successful leader is hard to find, even rare. We hold our presidents up for scrutiny and a few are held in highest regard. Lincoln and Roosevelt seem to be on historians lips daily looking for wartime leadership models to extoll. All sucessful wartime leaders that understood how to aim the country in the right direction and hold it there with steady resolve. Meeting the twists and turns of history to push the gigantic ship of the United States forward towards, peace, prosperity and a place for people and their families to take root and grow. It’s been done before and we need great leadership forward through these similar troubles again. Increased gun violence, civil divide, a rise in racism and hate towards Jew’s, Asians, the LGBTQ+ community are being aimed from outside the government and from within in states like Texas and Florida. These are real threats to the country as we have additional credible threats globally with China and Russia clearly agitating and causing troubled waters.
When it comes to leading in the 21st Century, we are. That’s it. We are. Biden is. The international relationships are shifting and Biden is on the side of peace and climate change. To be clear, pro peace, pro earth. In essence pro science and in matters not insignificant: pro rules, norms, looking for alternatives to solve our climate woes, not ignoring the challenges of internet as the future changes our world.
Ice cream, popcorn, hotdogs and the USA. Our relationship to these simple pleasures is both real and metaphor for our people and times. Rather than No Malarkey being dumb or yesterday (or 1850), Joe has used his phrase and creamy treat to bring us back, bring our senses back to our core of honest joy and attainable sweetness in life.
If there is a contender for the nomination, let them show up and be heard. Let them stand up, measure up and grab the brass ring for a battle with DFG. Joe is a force to topple too. Go for it. We should and do encourage. There may be some and we will all look and decide. It’s still the democracy we want to preserve. May the best contender contend!
I believe Biden has already proved his worth as a leader. As the great leader he is, I trust him to decide the next years for our country and for himself. If and when he earns the nomination of the Democratic Party, I hope all democrats are on board for the lightening round.
