It turns out a yacht is a pleasure vehicle and not a vehicle likely to be Ubered. The IRS, thinks yachts are only for pleasure tripping which is probably a good and reasonable changing the deduction rules for yacht owners away from the rules covering say, cars or jets.
While not a tax expert, it’s understood that some things get to be “written off” meaning essentially getting a credit on taxes you owe lessening the tax actually paid but there rules. Since a yacht is not a first choice vehicle of transportation but for cruising, the IRS has developed rules specific to that vehicle.
Harlan Crow as others may have, has figured out to still give lavish gifts and get tax credit. One doesn’t become a billionaire by squandering funds after all. Things are taking a bit of a dark turn as Crow’s message to everyone as reported by Politico today, …
The GOP megadonor’s lawyer said the panel did not have “the authority to investigate Mr. Crow’s personal friendship with Justice Clarence Thomas.”
He may have missed the point, but well, nah.
Backing up for a moment, to how this all works, it turns out, with a lawyer and a few bucks turning a yacht from money pit into money or tax deduction isn’t tough at all. Step one - Creating a company to lease out the yacht and have “them” (see how he did that) own it on paper. Check.
Two - Make a brochure. Check.
Three - Lease the yacht. Ok, well, to whom? Someone who will walk on the deck, cook in the galley? Um. Maybe. Maybe later. For Mr. Crow, later was fine.
So, use the yacht? Sure, no problem since is’s not being leased to anyone and just pay the rates from one business pocket to the other business pocket. No problem, I had some change in that pocket anyway. The money paid to the yacht company will be deductible as an expense. Huzzah what a bonus. When you have billions, you don’t need any at all. How odd.
So, hauling SCOTUS and wife around to soften up the judge for favorable judgements, or so it appears, and then deducting the cost of the trip. Wowzza is the only word to describe the size of something needed to implement that plan and making it actually legal may be another deal entirely. The IRS will likely take a dim view of this is as we are. Huzzah suspended for now, Harlan. Thanks Politico for breaking this and their full report here.
The story is not really a story about Harlan Crow but in how the court has been compromised and how the court has become very protective of their fall from grace. They like it.
Clarence Thomas has also made it very clear through his neglecting to fix the paperwork that discloses gifts although he’s had several chances and ignored each and every one.
The back and forth is exhausting to recount. In essence, Thomas has erred as Trump has erred in the documents case. If Trump had at any one of the many chances given him by NARA, the FBI, through the courts and subpoenas. If he had at any time said, “Ok, here are your documents”, this would have never risen to the level that it has, (which is epic). Both Crow and Thomas are in the spotlight, exactly where they never sought to be. Without getting into Tommy Tuberville’s story today, I’m thinking Crow, Thomas and Tuberville are all fellows that will wish they weren’t so stubborn and had answered to account when asked the first several hundred times.
Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr. is above opining something. Son of our 35th president’s brother, Robert, RFK Jr. is running for president on the Democratic ticket. His campaign is being run by or includes Jill Stein at the top. Stein is the important name to this candidacy as having run for president on the Green Party ticket.
Stein is a proven spoiler and perhaps unproven but acknowledged as a “friend” of Putin. This is older news and more here.
Like too many of the seemingly ridiculous out of the woodwork candidacies such as Cornell West, we need to understand the funding and the campaign to understand the why and the why not. Who is the backer is key to understanding the depths of the pockets and how much damage this wrecking crew may rack up. It’s the times we are in and what we have to deal with. Being prepared is another key to understanding the 2024 campaigning during this extremely long season.
It’s clear that RFK Jr. And others are running as spoilers to pull votes from Biden. Other things are clear as well after looking at his history. To encapsulate, at one time, RFK Jr., did good things for the environment. Some think it was an opportunity to show a better outward face for the Kennedy name. His prior struggles with serious drugs such as heroin are known and documented. How he personally squares that with more recent outcry against vaccines is unknown but his knowledge is extremely limited as was on display in his comments over the weekend. To be crystal clear, there are no medical differences between different ethnic groups. None enough to target one and not another in a shot of any kind. No farts in this video except some very bad science and observing him feeling perhaps too comfortable with talking about dividing up people by ethnicity for extinction. You decide.
Disqualifying remarks for most jobs, especially the presidency of Fart-town.. of course America. Focus. Morning after was a bit too weird for the Jr. The original video, likely taken by a cell phone at the table only feet away from his face, has really gotten under his skin and RFK Jr. is demanding apologies from media. If ever there was a time or place to say Whatever, it is now.
PS on that story is that No Labels, yet another Spoiler Alert in Progress, is backed by a guy who knows all about spoiler parties, Joe Lieberman. More on him another time but IOWA, a twofer..
DeSantis is considering Gov. Kim Reynolds of Iowa as his VP pick. Looks more like a karaoke team up. Captain and Tenille ?
Alls fair game since they have about zero chance of getting to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue except by public transportation.
When the glib Gov. announced the ban, she was a bit too gleeful in announcing the ban at 6 weeks. I find a victory lap like that more than inappropriate. It’s ghoulish.

A judge in Iowa, has put the 6 week abortion ban on hold pending further discussion through the courts.
Thanks for being here. I love the company. Hey,
