CPAC where facts just don't matter,
and Woke will be flogged until it repents.
Founded in 1974, the Conservative Political Action Conference was founded to be a place of annual gathering for the conservative activists and elected officials to exchange ideas. Wikipedia notes that Ronald Reagan was the keynote speaker in the first one. “The presidential hopeful used it to share his vision for the country—"A Shining City Upon A Hill," words borrowed from John Winthrop.[6]”
This years gathering seems lacking in support from the Republican Party. CPAC is a fractured place as is the American culture. Trump has cleaved portions of the country ideologically away from each other causing a weird gap, a no mans land, a political and cultural purgatory or a sea parting.
In it resides a swath of used to be Republicans, (UTBR?) Liz Cheney is one. Absent and curiously so are Republican National Committee Chairwoman Rona McDaniel, former VP Mike Pence, presidential hopeful and governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, Speaker McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. All either leadership of some kind or potential candidate.
This leaves a slender band of Republicans to carry the banner. Nikki Haley will be there as will Trump. Matt Schlapp CPAC chair and latest recipient of a lawsuit after sexual misconduct allegations, seems to be very welcoming on the CPAC website. The website itself is worth a look. Here’s a preview.
As we wait for the Republicans economic plan to compare with the Biden Administrations work, the GOP is on a four day fist bump that celebrates not being woke and convincing each other this is the way to govern. A couple statements from the website to claim their importance as providing timely ideas to a governing body. Ideas seem illusive.
Speeches are the reason to attend. The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan is there, Marjorie Green, Kari Lake and of course Trump. They lie. They simply stand there and Fox-talk themselves through hours of not really saying anything at all, except for all the things that will never come to pass or are just, well, are fabrications. Unanchored to anything except perhaps to a Kurt Vonnegut riff which is doubtful. Jordan in an effort to drive home a point about Democrats, said “there are Democrat Governors that won’t let you go to church on Sunday.” Scary, absurd and complete nonsense. Complete insanity from an increasingly insulated group.
Marge Green a Congresswoman from Georgia is trying to push her “Divorce America style” big girl thinking thought but so far, few are biting. It might take more time. Perhaps if she could work out all the details about creating only red and only blue states. Perhaps some kind of passport for everyone. Make them red or blue depending. Yeah, so many details to work on.
As I scream in my head daily, continuously, I remain calm. Calm-ish. Today, the jury came in with a verdict in the Murdaugh case. Guilty. People can pick out the truth from a mountain of other stuff. The jury, after looking at the facts and given guides by the judge, were able to bring in a verdict that seems fair and an honest assessment of the facts.
When Fox is taken into court by Dominion in April in their quest for truth, facts, and fairness and agin by Smartmatic in the not too distant future in the same mission, there will be one reality. Just one. Where facts will be not on parade with their less truthful companions. They will be seen with receipts. They will be judged on their own merit.
