The US Flag represents a united number of states symbolized by the stars. A star for each state. Our flag has changed with the number of states. Simple.
The red I recall was to symbolize the blood shed in our nations birth, upon research my memory is faulty and to stand for courage and valor. Things also change with the fashions. Perhaps I learned a less sensitive version. There are more ways to talk about how we choose to make the symbols we are proud of. Our flag, seal, bird are all emblems. They bring quick focus to the attributes of an entity bringing familiarity and information. The original logo and branding.
“The number of the stripes -13 -signifies the 13 colonies of the time. The red, historically, represents the British while the white stripes to represent liberty cuts through the red as a political statement against Great Britain and its rule over the colonies.” and, “The stripes represent the original 13 Colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.”
Flags say lots of things but they don’t always communicate in the same way. For example, the white means a particular thing with perimeters in the US flag but might be another sentiment in the flag of Alaska or Niger. Or no sentiment a plain un dyed fabric background?
The Israeli flag has a big Star of David on it. Let’s just talk about that star for a moment. I won’t say it is meaningless but it has come to mean the Jewish religion. The Jewish Virtual Library says: “The prime motive behind the wide diffusion of the sign in the 19th century was the desire to imitate Christianity. The Jews looked for a striking and simple sign which would "symbolize" Judaism in the same way as the cross symbolizes Christianity.” The idea worked as in the US, in the just post war era, for some Jew, assimilation was an important action to take in the aftermath of WWII. It was an effort to blen and be part of this great nation. Unfortunately, looking back some important false equivalents were made.
Chanukah a relatively minor holiday was brought forward in an effort to meet with the social demands of the winter Christmas season of gatherings and gifts matching Christmas trees with menorahs. Another simple design of a well used candelabra design given a particular Jewish spin for no real ideological reason, religious or otherwise.
Star of David, Jewish star, hexagram, call it by several names, it’s still light years away from the meaning of the cross to Christianity and to individual Christians no matter what the denomination. It’s just true. It’s a fact. Jews find no comfort in the Star of David except that it is a reminder of the Jewish Community and as an identifier at this time, indeed, Jews were forced to wear the star during the Holocaust as an identifier. Not the best memory but ones history is what it is.
The meaning of the cross to Christianity is not to be underscored. It’s sacred and for many “recalling the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the redeeming benefits of his Passion and death. The cross is thus a sign both of Christ himself and of the faith of Christians.” and
Not used from the go of Christian faith, but in the 4th century, is documented giving the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great the attribution of first use.
The hexagram used as the symbol of Judaism is a powerful symbol on its own describing the male (triangle from above) and mother (triangle from below) merged into one, but not embraced by Jews or the Jewish religion as an ideal or right of passage that mirrors the symbology and actual significance of the Christian cross. The “Jewish star” is a glyph.
When you see the flag of Israel, the flag is one of the government. A democracy with citizens of many religions and from many places. Israel, although the flag would signal differently if you don’t know the history, is not a country run by “Jewish law”. No. Israel is not run on the Bible, Torah, or scroll. They have a modern constitution.
Thanks for being here.❤️ More background facts about this topic, in the hopper.
The only thing I would use a cross for is to keep away vampires.
Most of my friends just happen to be secular Jews. It started with having a Jewish girlfriend and later renting a room in my my home to a Jewish woman named Linda. Linda was a party animal and always invited me to Jewish singles parties. I always introduced myself as Jim Goyboy. Always got a laugh. I learned a lot of Yiddish at the time, some of which is now forgotten. Do not use it you lose it.
I have only one child. When he was very young I sent him to daycare at the local JCC. He started while still crawling. He was crushed when at the age of 5 he found out he wasn’t Jewish.
Another funny story. I had this guy working for me that invited me to what I heard as a brisket. I love brisket and arrived with a healthy appetite. Turned out it was a Bris. Many jokes about that.
I am not religious at all and unfortunately I’m not comfortable around people who are highly religious no matter what the religion.
Gari, this is really educational and fascinating! Thank you :-)
