Growing up in a religion notoriously based on shame, aren’t they all?, shame in the Jewish homes of the 60’s even had a book How to be a Jewish Mother, in the vein of the funny records about the Kennedy’s stint in the White House and hello mudda, hello fadda of Alan Sherman. A required summer song for some.

Gentle shaming was in good fun but still, a dubious tool in the apron pocket of mothers everywhere. Every tough mother was called “a Jewish mother”, till the Asian Tiger mom stereotype surfaced. Shame is a big part of the process. It’s held like a knife on a string over the heads of the nervous ones as they try to perform. Threatening to be dropped at the first sign of weakness or imperfection. Wrath suspended and waiting. The bowstring unleashed sends an arrow to the softest squishy place festering a mark, a wound that never heals. It’s intentional. And it’s learned. Then perfected by the likes of one Donald Jessica Trump.
