Memory Lane, indeed.

2023. They are still losers so we must be winning. AND hopium is now legal.

We began 2023 with McCarthy’s 15 lightning rounds of voting to make him speaker. Then he left. He was de-gaveled and then he just left. “Gone” a theme for the GOP? Or changing of the guard? Santos makes the done and gone list by taking his feather boa and strutting away to appropriate jeers. Best Saturday Night Live in ages.

Mid summer looked to indictment watches as waves hit the beach. Republicans called it in an “early” start for campaigning. Bursting out of the gate a full eighteen months ahead of the election to get a good start to ignoring bad news for the party and the good Biden gets done in spite of any covid or supply chain issues we had. The DeSantis campaign roared like the MGM lion at Disney for starts but didn’t go the distance. Gifting Hollywood styled vacations to immigrants were a hit. He wore his fancy white boots.

Gun violence and the loss of Roe rocked our country. Ukraine’s Zelensky hosted President Biden. Fox and Dominion had woes that ultimately found Tucker Carlson floating in cyberspace looking for a home. Still looking, finding apps aren’t so easy to command. How’s that going, under Elon’s fascist leaning sign of the “X”, Pot Pie Boy? Still, no one knows what to call a message from the X thing. So awkward.

The boxes. The saga of the Mar a lago boxes came to light is becoming so deep no one could see it. Had to be seen in a sciff. No phones or electronics. Bleach to the eyes after seeing. More we know the worse it gets. Still embroiled in courtroom law-like fighting. Here’s an affidavit, bam. An appeal, wham. Grab a snack, this one will take while.

Interlaced with other trials, the boxes touch on presidential “immunity” which is an integral part of the fight we are in to shed us from the sticky fingers of crime by one citizen, Don Trump. To be fair… and pals. Federal, state, civil, corporate. Missed the small claims court for indictments but, it’s not over till the fat lady sings. Could be Kimberly Guilfoyle but Ginny Thomas may win the moment. She has my vote.

Clarence, her husband is also making big news in 2023 with extra circular spending and funding too. 2024 may be his bigger claim to fame though with Sen. Whitehouse on the beat.

Rudy has taken the tumble we thought he might. Broke and without remorse.

What a year. Exhausting. Putin had a scare with “losing” his buddy, Prigozhin’s support and Prigozhin himself. Phew, all ended well. Prigozhin later succumbed (in August) to faulty air. Putin and his fifteen or so body doubles seem fine.

Israel in tatters. Attacked. Then attacked for being attacked. Still sorting.

Trump wrestles the world for a chance to be something more awful than he is. The phrase to retire will be “believe a person when they tell you who they are”. He’s oddly polite. No really. After telling everyone to all caps… “rot in hell”… then in same breath .. “Merry Christmas”… or it’s his dementia showing. Maybe insanity. A mix. Hard to know for sure. Professionals with careers to lose tend not to commit.

What we do know is, he’s currently orchestrating the house members and courts. Or trying with the most mighty effort he can. Those little hands work overtime knitting up more evil. Media wonders what Biden will do for his retirement. Donald constantly places heavy demands on us all, and when elected as United “Schates” of America as Dictator, he will be Donald the First. See, he’s polite. He’s waiting for us to vote him in.

As we turn the page away from how we got here to where we are going, my wish, for everyone gets one, is that we love our world more. All of it. Love the hate to know it and understand it. Nothing ever changes till it’s understood. Find the way to cool the planet. It has to be someones chore. It will be unevenly done and some will resent the work. Such, as it’s said, is life.

Most of all, I, as a person, and as a writer of words and can make sweeping pronouncements (!) I wish everyone a truly good new year. Here’s to 2024! To the winners! Long may we prevail.
