While trying to survive coronavirus, the climate is taking a back seat in our mind. Not all, but, many are unconcerned in this moment. While needing to investigate politics, the climate is looming, but, not pressing. As we peak out from our homes in this divided time where money seems to fly away, can we be expected to recycle when the truck to move the cardboard gets only a few miles to the gallon. Being environmentally conscious is a burden we’ve put off as the disposable masks and little elastics for the ears pile up, a nightmare vision next to all the plastic floating in oceans. While we hope to tackle, lurching crisis to crisis, SCOTUS sits on top of the pile. Climate in the background. It may be time to admit that it has gotten away from us.
A new plan can be made that simply tells the truth. We don’t have the tech to clean the air, or, the oceans. Technology can’t handle the mess we are in but that is no reason not to try, certainly. Electric cars, bullet trains matter, but, not if you don’t have or plan for them. Then there’s the resistance of the oil companies and coal. Net Zero is a new approach (no, not really) that would get the corporation’s to swap bad stuff they do to climate, and do good stuff to replace the bad. Kinda like, eat an ice cream, skip a second biscuit. Anyone diet? It’s a feel good move. It won’t move the scale or set meaningful habits. Companies tend not to self regulate well but somehow in the end, smile and look good for the camera.
In an era of obfuscation, fakery, and, stuckness we sorely need real, and, honest. Real, and, honest stuff. Anything. Here’s another thing to admit. The last seven years under the watchful eye and constant comments of the former president, we are fatigued and due for a change in more ways than politics. Guns in the streets with and escalating shootings. Home spun terrorissm with unprecedented frequency. Toss those empty shells out responsibly! Spent cartridges…Please reload and recycle.
DJ Trump the Carnival Barker, the feel good guy. Don’t you worry, we got it handled, in Don we trust, send five bucks and don’t worry about climate change. That’s just a woke nonsense. Wind, but the birds! The cancer! He lowers the bar in every way, every time he speaks. Oil is enamored.
Don’t feel good about solutions that can’t work. Maybe “they” will stop making stuff up that is only meant to have us feel good, things will get better, down the road. Without real solutions nothing will change. Change may mean sacrifice of our way of life, and this is where people feel deflated and say “never mind” under their breath. Change may be in ways we don’t yet understand, not to mention the amazing flexibility we have shown over the past few years.
Climate change like so much, would benefit from honest talk that creates honest solutions. We need to reclaim what is important to us, and, begin to shut out the noise of a dying party. Focus on what is relevant in our lives and the lives of all on the planet. There is some good we can do. There is little point to any of it without clean water and air.
Climate is changing. We must be changing, too.
