I like what you are saying. However, I think I’m the fly in the ointment.

As I understand it the pax in Pax Romana was mostly pax because any disturbance of this peace was punishable by crucification. For example, during Augusta’s reign there were many Zealots--where the term comes from--in Palestine who caused disturbances and were promptly crucified.

Second, Commodus was assassinated with the help of his sister because of the “odious” taxation of the wealthy to help the poor so that they would not be rebellious. Poverty and hunger has a way of doing that. In my mind, this points to the real source of the problem and it is a problem--greed, entitlement, lack of empathy for others--that appears to be endemic to human nature.
