From the Statesman-Journal newspaper: “The Silverton Country Historical Society Museum, said curator and collections manager Judy Lowery shared the love story of Frances Doerfler and "Billy" Gable — better known as Clark Gable. Before he became a big-time movie star, Gable met Doerfler while they were touring with the Astoria Stock Company in 1922, according to the exhibit. Gable moved in with Doerfler at their family farm in Silverton where he worked until joining the Silver Falls Timber Company. Gable eventually left Silverton — and Doerfler — to pursue a career in acting and never returned.”

The Silver Falls Timber Company mill pond is now called Webb Lake. It’s near my mailbox. Small world.
