From the Statesman-Journal newspaper: “The Silverton Country Historical Society Museum, said curator and collections manager Judy Lowery shared the love story of Frances Doerfler and "Billy" Gable — better known as Clark Gable. Before he became a big-time movie star, Gable met Doerfler while they were touring with the Astoria Stock Company in 1922, according to the exhibit. Gable moved in with Doerfler at their family farm in Silverton where he worked until joining the Silver Falls Timber Company. Gable eventually left Silverton — and Doerfler — to pursue a career in acting and never returned.”

The Silver Falls Timber Company mill pond is now called Webb Lake. It’s near my mailbox. Small world.

Rimrock where I live in Az has the legacy of the Rimrock Lodge then dude ranch. The land is still fairly untouched. An original restaurant building waiting to be used again. Oddly a good chunk currently for sale. We have the original airport here. A strip surrounded by hanger homes still used. It brought old Hollywood here in a single engine plane one passenger at a time. Bette Davis was married here and later, nearby Sedona became a movie backdrop. I recently read about Gable and Lombard’s marriage and how they had purchaced some property and had a ranch and loved calling each other Maw and Paw. I thought the story was particularly sad. As you may know she’d died quite young in a plane crash. I don’t know anything about his previous life. I’ve avoided knowing too much about famous people just because of all this sadness. Although moving to Sedona before Rimrock changed that about old Hollywood.
