Thank you. Religion is fascinating. My parents did not attend church. I have no information about what religion the Heides were when they left Germany in the 1880’s. Probably Lutheran-adjacent. They even assimilated the pronunciation from the German “hi-Duh” to “hi-Dee”.

My grandmas father was a rabbi in the Jewish section somewhere in Austria-Hungary. Grandpa was ‘in diamonds’ then real estate after he got hit on the head too many times, and a very religious man. So of course their only son marries a Ukrainian 1st generation as himself. Now, my nephew, raised Jewish also marries a non Jew. He never even knew his grandfather.

It’s true assimilation and I believe that was my family’s intent.

Sometimes people just give up on correcting others on how to say their name. ? Heide?
